Nasopharyngeal infection creates abscess pocket

An, 67, with chronic sinusitis, recently experienced high fever, neck swelling, and difficulty opening her mouth; doctors diagnosed a neck abscess.

Ear, nose, and throat endoscopy and diagnostic imaging results at Tam Anh General Hospital TP HCM revealed a large abscess pocket in her deep neck region, caused by a nasopharyngeal infection. Doctors prescribed abscess drainage surgery to control the infection.

Master, Doctor Ho Van Huu, from the Ear, Nose, and Throat Center, explained that the cold year-end weather creates conditions for viruses and bacteria to thrive, causing pharyngitis and rhinosinusitis. An abscess is an accumulation of pus within body tissues, forming due to a bacterial infection. Ear, nose, and throat abscesses, which develop from pharyngitis, rhinosinusitis, tonsillitis, or otitis media, can spread to adjacent tissues and organs. Complications include sepsis, airway obstruction, and diffuse cellulitis.

Doctors advise adopting a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly, and limiting prolonged time in enclosed rooms. Enclosed environments can increase bacterial density, leading to a risk of cross-infection. Individuals experiencing high fever, swelling, pain, difficulty opening their mouth, or pain radiating to the face and neck should seek timely medical examination and treatment.
