Wearing incorrect prescription glasses means using lenses with a diopter (lens power) that is too high or too low, no longer matching the eye's current refractive state. This issue is common and affects both vision and eye comfort in daily activities.
Over-correcting glasses cause images to focus in front of the retina more than physiologically necessary, forcing the eyes to constantly adjust. Wearers may experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, distorted vision, or discomfort when moving. These effects are particularly noticeable when they first get new glasses or use glasses that were not properly prescribed.
Errors in astigmatism axis or incorrect pupillary distance can also lead to eye strain, mild double vision, eye pain, and reduced visual quality, even if the nearsightedness prescription has not changed significantly. These symptoms are often more pronounced when working up close, reading, or using electronic devices.
Many reasons contribute to people wearing incorrect prescription glasses for extended periods. The most common cause is not having regular eye exams, leading individuals to continue using old glasses even as their refractive errors change over time. Some intentionally wear under-corrected glasses, fearing a rapid increase in prescription or experiencing eye strain or dizziness with new glasses, while their eyes still struggle to see clearly. Conversely, some wear over-corrected glasses due to inaccurate refraction measurements or purchasing ready-made glasses without a specialized eye exam. Additionally, errors in measuring astigmatism axis, pupillary distance, or technically substandard lens manufacturing also contribute to discomfort.
If you have used your glasses for many years or experience unusual symptoms such as eye strain, blurred vision, headaches, dizziness, or discomfort while wearing them, do not try to endure or self-adjust. Instead, seek an eye exam for a re-evaluation. Maintaining regular eye check-ups every six to twelve months helps the doctor select appropriate glasses. This not only improves clear vision but also allows the eyes to work comfortably and limits prolonged accommodation disorders.
