What should pregnant mothers eat to prevent gestational diabetes?

I am 20 weeks pregnant and enjoy sweets, but I am concerned about gestational diabetes. How should I adjust my diet to prevent it? (Vy Thanh, 29 years old)

Response:

Gestational diabetes is a condition where blood sugar levels rise during pregnancy, typically developing between the 24th and 28th weeks. Pregnant women with gestational diabetes have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and it can lead to health complications such as premature birth, excessive fetal growth, congenital abnormalities in the baby, high blood pressure, or preeclampsia in the mother.

Preventing gestational diabetes not only protects the mother's health but also supports healthy fetal development. Being overweight or obese and having certain daily dietary habits are factors that increase the risk of gestational diabetes.

Prioritize lean protein sources such as fish, eggs, beans, tofu, and white poultry like chicken breast. You can also incorporate healthy fats from almonds, walnuts, olive oil, and various vegetable oils. Opt for whole grains like brown rice, oats, whole wheat pasta, and whole wheat bread, along with low-fat dairy products such as Greek yogurt and skim milk. Increasing your intake of green vegetables, broccoli, cucumbers, and low-sugar fruits is also beneficial for pregnant women.

Additionally, you should avoid fried foods, processed meals, canned goods, and sugary drinks. Limit bottled fruit juices and pre-made coffees high in milk and sugar.

Pregnant mothers should consume less than 25 g (about 6 teaspoons) of added sugar daily. Avoid consuming excessive amounts of sugar or carbohydrates in a single sitting. Instead, divide your intake into three main meals and one to two snacks to stabilize blood sugar levels.

Maintain 30 minutes of light exercise daily, under a doctor's guidance, and attend regular prenatal check-ups for gestational diabetes screening between weeks 24-28.
