Before bedtime
According to Parents, guardians should not let children use phones, tablets, or watch TV close to bedtime. On-screen content can keep children engaged, making it difficult for them to relax. The light from screens in the evening can also affect their circadian rhythm and the secretion of melatonin, a hormone involved in regulating sleep.
If children have a habit of watching videos or playing games before bed, parents should switch to calm activities such as reading, listening to stories, or preparing items for the next day. Maintaining screen-free time before bed helps children establish a consistent sleep routine.
During meals
Children watching phones or TV during meals often divert their attention to the screen instead of the food. They may eat distractedly, struggle to recognize hunger and fullness cues, or develop a habit of only eating when an electronic device is present.
Mealtimes are also opportunities for children to learn about tastes, chew food, and communicate with family members. Therefore, parents should keep phones, tablets, and TVs out of dining areas. Adults can talk with children about the food or daily events, fostering direct interaction during family meals.

While children are studying
Electronic devices can support learning, but children should not switch between doing homework and watching videos or playing games. Constantly changing content makes it difficult for children to maintain focus on the task at hand.
If children use an iPad or computer for school, parents should clearly distinguish between time for educational use and entertainment. After completing their assignments, children should step away from the screen rather than immediately transitioning to an entertainment activity on the device, according to the Times of India.
Children should use electronic devices at appropriate times, prioritizing content that supports learning, creativity, and healthy entertainment. Parents need to agree on start and end times. While using devices, children should sit correctly, maintain a suitable distance from the screen, and occasionally look away to rest their eyes. Parents can also help children choose age-appropriate content.
