Japanese surgeon Takeshi Kainuma explains that the body is typically in a state of mild dehydration after a long night's sleep. Consuming coffee on an empty stomach as a form of rehydration can stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, leading to vasoconstriction and a further increase in morning blood pressure, which is naturally higher. Over time, this habit could prematurely age blood vessels by more than 10 years.
According to Dr. Kainuma, this effect is particularly concerning for middle-aged individuals, patients with hypertension, or those suffering from prolonged sleep deprivation, as these groups already face a heightened risk of cardiovascular damage.

A significant concern is that early vascular aging often presents no clear symptoms. Many individuals remain complacent because their routine health indicators appear normal, while chronic inflammation silently accumulates due to blood pressure fluctuations, progressively increasing the risk of heart disease.
So, when is the best time to drink coffee to minimize its adverse effects?
Dr. Kainuma recommends prioritizing water intake immediately after waking to rehydrate the body. Following this, wait approximately 30-60 minutes for stress hormones to naturally subside before consuming coffee. If you don't feel hungry but still desire coffee, remember to have a small snack, such as a banana, yogurt, or some nuts, to line your stomach. Avoid drinking coffee on a completely empty stomach.
Simply by adjusting your morning routine — drinking water first, having a light snack if needed, and then enjoying your coffee — you can help reduce symptoms like a rapid heart rate, anxiety, and overall strain on your cardiovascular system.
