Lynh had an ongoing property dispute with his family over a house and land. An enforcement decision required him to surrender the property by mid-June.
On the morning of 8/6, Lynh reportedly brought gasoline to the house. The property also served as a stationery store for Kim Sa Thuy Trading and Services Company Limited, managed by his younger sister in Binh Dai commune. He doused the premises with gasoline, set it ablaze, and then left.

The arson resulted in the death of Lynh's 82-year-old father, who was paralyzed and unable to walk. Police later discovered the body of a 42-year-old female teacher who had been at the location to photocopy documents. Initial estimates indicate property damage of approximately 5 billion VND.
