Debtor shot in violent debt collection attempt

A 37-year-old man, Nguyen Manh Cuong, and his accomplices allegedly assaulted and shot a borrower after a debt collection attempt failed.

On 25/2, Dong Nai Police detained Nguyen Manh Cuong, 37, on charges of intentional injury. Authorities are also seeking Nguyen Thanh Nam and Nguyen Van Binh for their involvement in the incident.

The investigation revealed that the incident stemmed from a 120 million VND debt owed by a 53-year-old man residing in Binh Phuoc ward to Nguyen Thanh Nam. Nam subsequently enlisted Cuong and Binh to assist him in collecting the money.

On 13/2, the trio went to the home of an acquaintance of the debtor in Cay Da hamlet, Phu Nghia commune, to retrieve the payment. During discussions, an agreement could not be reached, leading Cuong to use pepper spray to strike the victim's head, inflicting injuries.

When the victim resisted, Binh drew a support tool gun and fired one shot. The group then quickly fled the scene in an oto. Relatives rushed the seriously injured victim to the hospital.

Following an intensive investigation lasting several days, police successfully apprehended Cuong.
