A 51-year-old father, whose identity was not disclosed, was tried on 8/6 at the Aix court for identity theft, which occurred between 2014 and 2023.
The case came to light when, on 3/2/2023, a 19-year-old woman lodged a complaint against her father at the Aix-en-Provence police station. She had been receiving numerous notifications for unpaid traffic fines, primarily parking violations, totaling nearly 5,000 EUR. These fines, incurred in the Hautes-Alpes region where her father resides, had led to deductions from her bank account.
The car involved was purchased by the father in 2013 and registered under his daughter's name when she was only 9 years old.
Prompted by her father's lack of action regarding the fines, she decided to pursue the complaint.
During the trial, the father, who appeared without legal representation, claimed he had been advised by one friend to use this method and believed it was permissible under the law. He reasoned that minors were not obligated to pay fines, making the arrangement acceptable.
However, under cross-examination, he eventually confessed that his true intention was to evade traffic violation fines.
The court's review of his criminal record revealed a history of offenses, including 12 previous convictions. Seven of these were related to fraud and breach of trust, indicating this was not an isolated incident.
The father received a sentence of 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, and was ordered to pay compensation to his daughter.
