The Sarasota Police Department in Florida recently posted a video on social media documenting an encounter between officers, a boy, and his father on 14/6 off Lido Key on the Gulf of Mexico coast.
A marine patrol unit, while on duty, observed the boy alone at sea in strong currents.
"Where are your parents?" an officer asked.
The boy pointed to his father, and officers asked him to lead them there.
"Is that your son on the jet ski? What's going on here?" the officer asked. The father appeared to realize he was caught.
"Yes, I apologize. I suppose he's not old enough to drive it. But we've been using jet skis on the lake for several years. He's very skilled," the father said.
Officers asked the boy's age, and the father confirmed he was 8 years old. "And you thought that was legal?" the officer asked, explaining that children must be at least 14 years old to operate such a vehicle.
The father faces charges of a second-degree misdemeanor and will have to appear in court.
