Police debunk fake news of Grab drivers 'mass app shutdown'

Hanoi police have identified numerous online posts claiming 'Grab drivers are simultaneously shutting down their apps or going on strike' as false, created solely to attract engagement.

The Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department of Hanoi City Police announced today that several accounts on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube recently published and shared posts, images, and videos related to Grab drivers collectively 'turning off their apps', ceasing operations, or calling for an app shutdown on 12/9 and 13/9.

These posts frequently used phrases such as 'grab drivers simultaneously turn off apps', 'strike', 'grab paralyzed', and 'all drivers cease operations'. They also included unverified comments, assessments, and figures regarding income levels and discounts, without citing specific sources. Notably, many accounts reposted this content solely to attract views, likes, and boost engagement.

In collaboration with Grab Co., Ltd., the Cyber Security Department confirmed that the company did not issue any 'app shutdown' notices, and its service operations have remained normal and stable recently.

Police also worked with a YouTube account owner in Hanoi, who admitted to posting such content to attract interaction. This individual received an administrative penalty.

Following this incident, Hanoi Police urge the public to exercise increased vigilance when encountering information related to calls for the Grab community to deactivate their applications. Social media users should avoid panic and refrain from hastily believing unverified information.

Individuals should not share, comment on, or repost articles whose origin, timing, and accuracy are unverified. When encountering images, videos, or screenshots online, it is crucial to verify the time, location, and source of publication to prevent the reuse of outdated information or the manipulation of content that could lead to misunderstanding.
