The suspect, identified as Suraj Bhojraj Borkar, 28, was apprehended just about 30 minutes after the robbery at a State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Nagpur district, Maharashtra state, on 10/9.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. as employees were retrieving cash from an ATM. Suraj reportedly stormed into the bank and assaulted the staff with chili powder.
Security camera footage from the bank showed Suraj even chased employees, targeting them with chili powder. Amidst the panic, Suraj leaped over the counter, grabbed a bundle of cash worth approximately 453,000 Indian rupees, and fled.
A bank employee immediately pursued the suspect, while several police officers patrolling nearby also joined the chase. Suraj was apprehended about one kilometer from the bank.
Police stated that Suraj was unemployed and in debt from stock market trading, which may have been his motivation for the robbery.
"He waited to see when the employees would bring money from the ATM room to the bank. When the employees brought the money out, he followed them," said Inspector Ramesh Khune.
Investigators are reviewing the security camera system to clarify the incident and determine if Suraj had accomplices.
All the stolen money has been recovered by police.
