Stage lighting technician charged in student's electrocution death

Ta Hoang Nguyen has been charged with negligence leading to the death of a 9th-grade student during a school performance in Quang Ngai.

On 26/8, Nguyen, 40, from An Phu commune, was charged by the Quang Ngai provincial police with negligence causing death due to violation of professional regulations, under Article 129 of the 2015 Criminal Code.

The student touched the metal frame (right side of the photo) and was electrocuted during a performance at Ba To Secondary School on the evening of 25/4. Image taken from video.

On the evening of 25/4, Ba To Secondary School hosted a student performance. Nguyen was responsible for the stage lighting, contracted by the event organizer. During the show, Truong Cong Tai, 15, collapsed after touching a metal frame backstage, suffering multiple burns. A forensic examination confirmed electrocution as the cause of death.

It had been raining during the performance. Several students reported feeling tingling sensations in their feet, indicating electrical leakage in the performance area. Teachers alerted the event organizers who claimed to have "resolved" the issue.

Principal Nguyen Van Loc stated the school had contracted a company in Ba Dong commune for the sound system, lighting, and stage. After the incident, teachers administered first aid and transported Tai to Ba To Medical Center, but he did not survive.
