Family goes into hiding after lottery win

Instead of celebrating, a couple turned off their phones and fled their home immediately after receiving a 1,5 crore rupee (over 4,5 billion VND) lottery prize, fearing extortion by criminals.

In Saideke village, Punjab, the home of Nasib Kaur and Ram Singh has been closed for several days. Neighbors have been unable to contact the family. Local police confirmed that the entire family relocated to a relative's house for temporary refuge, citing concerns for their safety.

Nasib and her husband are poor laborers with four children. Ram Singh occasionally buys lottery tickets, typically opting for 50 rupee tickets. On 6/12, he decided to purchase a 200 rupee ticket (approximately 60,000 VND) and unexpectedly won the top prize.

Upon learning of their win, the family traveled to the lottery office in Chandigarh to submit their ticket and claim the prize. There, staff warned them about the risk of being targeted by criminals. Fearing this prospect, immediately after completing the procedures, Ram and his wife turned off all their phones and left their current residence.

According to Punjab state lottery staff, Nasib's family's fears are not unfounded. Previously, many big prize winners in the area have become targets for extortion gangs. A notable example is Amit Kumar, a vegetable seller who won 11 crore rupees (approximately 33 billion VND) last month. After receiving his prize, Amit was repeatedly threatened by phone, becoming so fearful that he dared not leave his home and refused to return to the lottery office to finalize paperwork.

Tarlochan Singh, a local police representative, stated that he has contacted Nasib's family to reassure them and committed to ensuring their safety.

While a lottery win is often perceived as good fortune, it can introduce a range of risks for many. Winners often become targets for criminals, face scrutiny and envy from their communities, and even experience conflicts within their own families.

Sudden wealth can disrupt lives, causing insecurity and compelling many to live discreetly or alter their daily routines. For these individuals, winning the lottery is not merely an unexpected gift but also a stressful test of their peace of mind.
