Rescue Team 116 located Major Tung’s body at 6:05 PM, approximately 350 meters from the foot of Bo Bridge. The Hung Yen Provincial Military Command confirmed his identity and handed over the body to his family for funeral arrangements.

Around 9:40 AM on 12/9, Major Tung was returning to his unit by motorbike after completing a mission. As he reached the middle of Bo Bridge, he saw a young man struggling with his mother. He, along with Doan Van Tien, a passerby, intervened to de-escalate the situation.
The mother explained that her son intended to jump off the bridge. After being persuaded by the two men, the young man agreed to go home and asked Major Tung to take him. However, when Major Tung turned to retrieve his motorbike, the man unexpectedly jumped into the Tra Ly River. Major Tung immediately dove in to rescue him, swimming close to the victim, but was swept away by the strong currents.
Major Tran Van Tung, 39 years old, enlisted in September 2005. He served as the Commander of Battalion 3, 568th Infantry Regiment, under the Hung Yen Provincial Military Command. He was married and had two children.
The young man who jumped off the bridge is from Dong Hung commune, Hung Yen province. As of the evening of 13/9, authorities had not yet found him.
