Crocodile escape and bite leads to over 300 million VND fine for owner

An illegally kept crocodile escaped its enclosure and bit a resident in Tay Ninh, resulting in a fine exceeding 315 million VND and the confiscation of the entire enclosure.

On 27/10, a crocodile kept at Nguyen Minh Tuan's home unexpectedly escaped its enclosure, crawling into a nearby canal. A resident checking fish traps behind their garden was attacked by the crocodile, sustaining leg injuries. Residents later surrounded and apprehended the animal.

On 17/12, the Tay Ninh Department of Agriculture and Environment announced an administrative penalty against Nguyen Minh Tuan, 34, residing in Tam Vu commune. He was fined for illegally keeping a Group IB endangered, rare wild animal without legal origin documentation.

The approximately 8 kg crocodile Tuan kept is a saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), listed as an endangered and rare species. In addition to the fine, authorities confiscated the crocodile enclosure, measuring 2,5 m wide and 3 m long, constructed with B40 mesh and an iron frame.

According to Tuan, he received the crocodile as a pet from an acquaintance on social media about four years ago.
