Distance signs removed from Nhat Tan Bridge after three days of installation

On the afternoon of 27/9, the Hanoi Department of Construction ordered the removal of a series of distance warning signs on both sides of Nhat Tan Bridge, just three days after their installation.

The removal followed numerous complaints from drivers, who argued that the signs reduced traffic speed in both directions and caused prolonged congestion on the bridge.

The signs, installed on 24/9, marked distances of 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 m. Corresponding painted lines on the road surface aimed to help drivers estimate their distance from the vehicle ahead. Authorities completed the installation of these signs and lines at the bridge's entrance, specifically in the direction from Noi Bai Airport to the city center.

The Hanoi Department of Construction stated that the installation stemmed from recent serial accidents and collisions involving multiple vehicles on Nhat Tan Bridge, impacting traffic safety and flow. In 2026 alone, several chain-reaction collisions occurred between cars traveling in the same direction. Incidents on 7/2 and 17/8 damaged many vehicles, some overturning, causing significant congestion on the bridge.

The department clarified that the signs were not for issuing penalties. Instead, they aimed to provide visual information, warn drivers, and help them estimate distances to adjust speed and maintain safe following distances.

A representative from the Hanoi Department of Construction explained that the removal of the distance signs was temporary, pending further public awareness campaigns for road users. On 26/9, Colonel Pham Viet Cong, Deputy Director of the Traffic Police Department, also stated that the signs were not for penalties, but mainly for public awareness.
