Shortly after 10h, smoke and flames rose high from the roadside gold shop. Nearby residents noticed and climbed onto the roof, attempting to extinguish the fire with buckets of water, but were unsuccessful. The fire spread quickly, with smoke engulfing the area, forcing neighboring households to evacuate and alert the police.
About 10 minutes later, 5 fire engines and 34 officers and firefighters from the Can Tho City Police Department's Fire Prevention and Fighting Police arrived. Authorities removed parts of the roof to gain access, control, and fully extinguish the fire after about 20 minutes.
Nguyen Tan Dat, the gold shop owner, stated the initial cause was an old laptop belonging to his 25-year-old son. The laptop, which had been running continuously and placed on a mattress in a private bedroom, short-circuited and exploded, leading to the fire. The son was not in the room when the fire occurred. The incident caused no casualties and only minor property damage.
