Early on 25/5, fisherman Le Van Tinh, 32, from Tam Hai 2 residential group, Hai Ninh ward, secured a golden pomfret catch. His 320 CV fishing boat, carrying over 10 crew members, landed more than one ton of the fish in the waters bordering Ha Tinh and Quang Tri, generating approximately 300 million VND. This haul marks a rare occurrence for the region, where large golden pomfret catches have been uncommon for several years.
Upon reaching the fishing grounds, the boat's sonar detected a large school of golden fish moving in a long band beneath the surface, dozens of meters from the vessel. The crew immediately deployed a net, 15 meters wide and 250 meters long, to encircle the fish. After about one hour, the fishermen began hauling in their catch. The golden pomfret thrashed violently in the net, causing the sea surface to churn with whitecaps. Over 10 crew members worked together, gripping the net opening tightly and pulling rhythmically to bring all the fish into the hold.
The catch was estimated to weigh over one ton, with many fish weighing 5-10 kg and the largest around 20 kg. That afternoon, the boat docked at Hai Ninh ward beach. The boat owner and relatives used baskets and plastic trays to transport the fish ashore, covering them with ice to maintain freshness before selling to traders. Within a few hours, the entire catch was sold. Mr. Tinh expressed his excitement, recalling that his boat had previously landed a catch of over 3 tons three years ago, but such large hauls have been uncommon in recent times.

A leader from Hai Ninh ward stated that golden pomfret is a valuable species, typically moving in large schools. In recent years, local fishermen have usually only caught tens to hundreds of kilograms per trip. Hai Ninh ward currently has hundreds of boats engaged in near-shore fishing. Over the past week, favorable weather and calm seas have enabled many vessels to secure seafood catches, bringing high incomes to local fishermen. Golden pomfret, also known as "ca vang duong," has flavorful meat and is commonly prepared steamed, braised with ginger and chili, in tomato sauce, as soup, or in hot pot.
