The city People's Committee leadership issued the directive on the afternoon of 29/6, during a survey of the Xuyen Tam Canal renovation project. Chairman Duoc emphasized the need for the investor to review progress and organize construction efficiently to shorten the timeline while ensuring technical standards and construction quality.
"The investor must devise a plan to shorten the construction time, meeting the city's requirement for completion by the end of 2027," Mr. Duoc stated.
The Xuyen Tam Canal beautification and renovation project spans nearly 6,7 km, connecting the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal to the Vam Thuat River, along with three auxiliary branches totaling over 2,2 km. The project traverses four wards: An Nhon, Binh Thanh, Binh Loi Trung, and Gia Dinh, with a total investment exceeding 17,230 billion VND.
To date, the project has completed land acquisition and cleared over 2,200 households and organizations, handing over the site to the construction unit. During the compensation process, the Bach Dang Street frontage area in Binh Thanh ward recorded the project's highest compensation rate, exceeding 280 million VND per square meter.

The Ho Chi Minh City Chairman commended local authorities for mobilizing residents to dismantle their homes and hand over the site by the end of June deadline. He urged contractors to optimize construction methods to limit extensions of the timeline.
Mr. Dau An Phuc, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Investment Project Management Board, announced that the unit would re-engage with contractors to develop a detailed schedule. If necessary, the construction site will increase shifts and crews to accelerate progress, striving to complete the entire project by the end of 2027.

The project is divided into three construction packages. Construction package 3, passing through the Van Lang University area, commenced in 5/2025 and is expected to be operational by 11/2026.
"Once this package is completed, residents will be able to envision how the appearance of the Xuyen Tam Canal-side road will transform," Mr. Phuc said.

The Xuyen Tam Canal renovation project was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in 5/2002 but was delayed for over 20 years due to procedural hurdles and site clearance issues. Many sections of the canal were polluted and encroached upon by houses, affecting the lives of thousands of households.
Upon completion, the project will improve drainage, reduce pollution, beautify the urban landscape, and create a canal-side road through Ho Chi Minh City's inner-city area.
