Hue City is taking steps to restore its historic Imperial Citadel. The Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects for Area 1 announced on 30/7 that it is working with Hue City's Military Command to finalize procedures and clear land for the removal of military bunkers from the Imperial Citadel and the surrounding Imperial City. These structures, built between 1957 and 1975, are no longer considered effective for national defense and detract from the Nguyen Dynasty-era site.

The project involves dismantling 31 military installations within Hue's Imperial City (including 26 bunkers, two shelters, two watchtowers, and an anti-aircraft emplacement) and 9 installations at Hai Thanh Citadel, Van Mieu (Temple of Literature), and Vo Mieu (Temple of Warriors). The total cost is estimated at 31 billion Vietnamese dong (VND).
Files for seven bunkers at Hai Thanh Citadel have been submitted to Military Region 4 Command for approval, with dismantling expected to begin soon. Land acquisition and compensation for the bunkers within the Imperial City are currently underway, according to a representative of the Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects for Area 1.

Previously, to preserve and restore the Hue Citadel complex to its original Nguyen Dynasty state, the city relocated residents and cleared more recently constructed buildings. The broader restoration plan includes the relocation of 4,915 households (2,233 primary and 2,682 secondary) from the historic area at a cost of nearly 1,890 billion VND.
