Landmarks of the August Revolution

Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi, Tu Do Stadium in Hue, and Norodom Square in Ho Chi Minh City were sites of rallies and demonstrations that culminated in the August Revolution 80 years ago.

Number 101 Tran Hung Dao Street in Hanoi served as the headquarters of the Hanoi Revolutionary Military Committee (also known as the Insurrection Committee) in August 1945. Here, the Hanoi Party Committee and the Revolutionary Military Committee worked tirelessly, issuing directives and leading the uprising that seized power in the capital.

August Revolution Square, formerly the Hanoi Opera House Square, spanning 2,600 m2, hosted two major rallies on 17/8 and 19/8/1945. The rally on 19/8 transformed into a demonstration and armed uprising, leading to the seizure of power in Hanoi.

Following the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on 2/9/1945, the square continued to host important events: the opening of "Golden Week," Southern Resistance Day, and the launch of the famine relief movement.

In 1994, the square was renamed August Revolution Square. In 2011, along with the Hanoi Opera House, it was designated a national historical and architectural site. Image: Thanh Hai/TTXVN

Bac Bo Phu, formerly the Tonkin Governor's Palace, built by the French colonial administration, comprises the office building (1898) and the Governor's Residence (1918). After the French coup on 9/3/1945, the Japanese renamed it the Tonkin Imperial Palace.

On 19/8/1945, Hanoi residents and self-defense units captured the Imperial Palace. The following day, it was renamed Bac Bo Phu and became President Ho Chi Minh's residence and office. In December 1946, a fierce battle took place here between French forces and the Vietnam National Guard. Upon their return, the French renamed it the Palace of the Prime Minister of North Vietnam.

After the liberation of Hanoi in 1954, the office building became the headquarters of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs, while the Governor's Residence became the Government Guest House. In 2005, the complex was recognized as a revolutionary resistance landmark. Image: Thanh Hai/TTXVN

On 22/8/1945, the Viet Minh in Hue held a large rally at Tu Do Stadium to promote the revolution and call for a general uprising. A day later, the general uprising in Hue succeeded, leading to the establishment of the provisional revolutionary government of Thua Thien Hue province.

Today, the stadium remains active, hosting sporting and cultural events. It has a capacity of nearly 20,000 and has undergone several renovations. Image: Vo Thanh

The residence of Nguyen Thi An served as President Ho Chi Minh's first residence and office upon his return to Hanoi from the Viet Bac resistance base from 23/8 to 25/8/1945.

Here, President Ho Chi Minh met with revolutionary leaders like Truong Chinh, Vo Nguyen Giap, and Tran Dang Ninh to discuss the results of the general uprising and prepare for the Declaration of Independence, which would establish the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Image: Ngoc Thanh

Number 48 Hang Ngang Street, the private residence of patriotic bourgeois couple Trinh Van Bo and Hoang Thi Minh Ho, was chosen by the Party Central Committee as President Ho Chi Minh's residence and office upon his return to Hanoi in late August 1945. Here, he and the Party Central Standing Committee made crucial domestic and foreign policy decisions, determined the composition of the new government, and organized the Independence Ceremony.

In a second-floor room, President Ho Chi Minh drafted the Declaration of Independence, which gave birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on 2/9/1945.

In 1979, the building was designated a national historical site. Today, it displays documents and artifacts related to President Ho Chi Minh's time there. Image: Hoang Giang/TTXVN

Ba Dinh Square, located near the western gate of the Nguyen dynasty's Thang Long citadel. During French rule, the French demolished the citadel and built the Puginier flower garden. In early August 1945, the garden was renamed Ba Dinh.

On 2/9/1945, President Ho Chi Minh, on behalf of the Provisional Government, read the Declaration of Independence, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and marking the complete victory of the August Revolution.

Since 19/5/2001, the daily flag-raising ceremony at Ba Dinh Square, conducted by the honor guard, begins at 6:00 a.m. (summer, from 1/4 to 31/10) and 6:30 a.m. (winter, from 1/11 to 31/3), with the flag-lowering ceremony at 9:00 p.m. Image: Ngoc Thanh/TTXVN

Representatives of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam appeared on the platform on 2/9/1945. The platform was constructed primarily of wood and decorated with fabric.

Ngu Phung Pavilion, above Ngo Mon Gate, is where Emperor Bao Dai abdicated and handed over the imperial seal and sword to representatives of the Provisional Government on 30/8/1945.

On 23/8, more than 150,000 people took to the streets in rallies and armed marches, forcing the government to surrender. Emperor Bao Dai's abdication marked the end of Vietnam's feudal monarchy. The last Nguyen emperor handed over the imperial seal and sword to Tran Huy Lieu, along with Nguyen Luong Bang and Cu Huy Can, representatives of the provisional revolutionary government. Hundreds of thousands of Saigon residents gathered at Norodom Square (now Le Duan Street, District 1) to hear President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

The platform was situated on Norodom Street, just behind Notre Dame Cathedral. The ceremony was scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on 2/9, but Saigon was abuzz with excitement from early morning. Image: Thanh Tung/History of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee 1930-1945
