Le Thanh Hai stripped of former Ho Chi Minh City chairman title

The prime minister has decided to revoke the former chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee title and other positions held by Le Thanh Hai due to violations and shortcomings in his work.

According to the prime minister's decision on 12/8, the disciplinary action against Mr. Hai is effective from 21/5/2024.

On the same day, the prime minister dismissed Nguyen Ba Hoan, deputy minister of home affairs (former deputy minister of labor, invalids and social affairs), due to violations and shortcomings, and he was expelled from the party by the secretariat.

In mid-May 2024, the central committee decided to remove Le Thanh Hai, former member of the politburo, former secretary of the municipal party committee, and former chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, from all party positions.

According to the politburo and the secretariat, Mr. Hai, along with Le Hoang Quan and Nguyen Thanh Phong – former members of the party central committee and former chairmen of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, violated the principles of democratic centralism, party regulations, and laws. They also violated regulations on what party members are not allowed to do and their responsibilities to set an example. They were also deemed irresponsible and negligent in their leadership, leading to numerous violations and shortcomings within the city's party organization and government.

These violations caused "serious consequences, risks of damage, and huge losses of state money and assets, leading to serious and especially serious criminal cases." Many party organizations, officials, and party members faced disciplinary actions and criminal prosecution, causing public outrage and diminishing the prestige of the party organization and the city government.

Mr. Le Thanh Hai, 75, from Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province, was a member of the politburo for the 10th and 11th terms and a member of the central committee for three terms (9th-11th). His career has been closely tied to Ho Chi Minh City, holding various leadership positions such as vice chairman and chairman of the city People's Committee, and secretary of the municipal party committee for two terms, 2005-2010 and 2010-2015.

In 3/2020, Mr. Le Thanh Hai was removed from his former position as secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City party committee for the 2010-2015 period due to his responsibility for violations in the leadership and direction of investment in the Thu Thiem new urban area.
