Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang, 55, is from Binh Duong province. He holds a bachelor's degree in military science and is a member of the 13th communist party central committee.
He previously served as deputy commander and then commander of Division 5, Military Region 7, and commander of the TP HCM High Command. He became deputy commander of Military Region 7 in 2/2020 before assuming the role of commander in 11/2020.
The Ministry of National Defense is currently led by General Phan Van Giang as minister. The eight deputy ministers are: General Nguyen Tan Cuong, chief of the general staff of the Vietnam People's Army; Senior Lieutenant General Vo Minh Luong; Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien; Senior Lieutenant General Le Huy Vinh; Senior Lieutenant General Vu Hai San; Senior Lieutenant General Pham Hoai Nam; Lieutenant General Nguyen Hong Thai; and Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang.
