Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Hien, 58, is from Hoa Binh commune, Vu Thu district, Thai Binh province. He holds a bachelor's degree in military science and is a member of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. He has previously served as commander of the 365th Air Defense Division and deputy commander of the Air Defense - Air Force Service.
In June 2020, he was appointed deputy commander and chief of staff of the Air Defense - Air Force Service. He has held the position of commander of the Air Defense - Air Force Service since May 2023.

The prime minister has recently made several key personnel decisions within the military. These include appointing Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang, commander of Military Region 7, as vice minister of national defense; appointing Major General Le Xuan The, deputy commander of Military Region 7, as commander of Military Region 7; and appointing Major General Vu Hong Son, deputy commander and chief of staff of the Air Defense - Air Force Service, as commander of the Air Defense - Air Force Service.
Colonel Tran Thanh Hai, deputy chief of staff of Military Region 5, has been appointed deputy commander of Military Region 5.
The current minister of national defense is General Phan Van Giang. The vice ministers include: General Nguyen Tan Cuong (chief of the general staff), Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Senior Lieutenant General Le Huy Vinh, Senior Lieutenant General Vu Hai San, Senior Lieutenant General Pham Hoai Nam, Lieutenant General Nguyen Hong Thai, Lieutenant General Nguyen Truong Thang, and Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Hien.
