MiG-21 fighter jet "forgotten" for over 40 years in Ca Mau

A MiG-21 fighter jet lies amidst overgrown grass in Ca Mau, severely deteriorated after decades of neglect and lack of maintenance.

The MiG-21 jet rests on a plot of land covered in weeds behind a public service building on Nguyen Trai street, An Xuyen ward, a sparsely traveled area in Ca Mau.

This supersonic jet fighter, designed by the Soviet Union, was introduced in 1959 and saw widespread operation by the Vietnam People's Air Force.

The fuselage, over 14 m long, still retains its basic structure, reminiscent of the supersonic fighter it once was; Russian text is still visible on its shell. The silver metal surface shows almost no paint, revealing oxidized material.

The cockpit of the MiG-21 has lost its control panel, joystick, and other components, leaving only a bare metal frame.

According to the Ca Mau Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in 1985, on the 10th anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam (30/4/1975), Minh Hai province (now Ca Mau) collaborated with Military Region 9 to bring three aircraft for display in front of the Provincial Post Office, now Hung Vuong Park.

After the exhibition, Military Region 9 relocated two of the aircraft, leaving one MiG-21 for local management, which was then moved to its current location. The managing authority has not been identified due to a lack of records from various periods.

The wings of the MiG-21 are corroded, warped, and visibly deteriorated; a section is destroyed, riddled with holes, exposing internal materials.

The nose of the aircraft shows numerous cracks and widespread rust, no longer intact.

Many parts of the MiG-21 are damaged and eroded, exposing internal wires and equipment; the engine's details are no longer discernible.

Local authorities have cleared and cleaned the area and are considering options to preserve or relocate the MiG-21 to a suitable site.

Ly Vy Trieu Duong, Deputy Director of the Ca Mau Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated that they will coordinate with the Provincial Military Command to work with specialized agencies under Military Region 9 to verify its origin and complete the necessary documentation.
