Around 2 p.m., a 16-seater passenger van from Ha Noi and a tractor-trailer from Nghe An were traveling in the right lane, heading northbound on the Nghi Son - Dien Chau expressway. As they reached the section through Hoang Mai ward, the passenger van suddenly shifted into the left lane, close to the concrete median. It then collided with a small truck from Nghe An, which was traveling in the same direction. Simultaneously, the Nghe An-registered tractor-trailer, still in the right lane, crashed directly into a Thanh Hoa-registered truck ahead of it.
This chain collision created thick smoke and dust. The passenger van became wedged into the rear of the Nghe An truck and was pinned against the concrete median. The Nghe An tractor-trailer and the Thanh Hoa truck overturned onto the roadside. Two drivers sustained injuries and required emergency medical attention.
At the scene, all four vehicles sustained heavy damage, with debris scattered across the road. Over 10 meters of guardrail were knocked down. The incident caused significant congestion on the Nghi Son - Dien Chau expressway, lasting for over three hours.
Authorities responded by opening the median to divert vehicles to the Quynh My interchange. They also deployed tow trucks to remove the damaged vehicles from the scene. By over 6 p.m., the area was cleared, and traffic resumed smoothly.
The expressway's management unit reported that at the time of the accident, the weather was sunny, the road surface was dry, and all signaling systems were fully operational. Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the collision.
