northern Vietnam braces for heatwave next week

Temperatures in northern Vietnam are expected to exceed 35°C early next week, rising to 37°C by mid-week. Central Vietnam will also experience high temperatures, while southern Vietnam can expect afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

Northern Vietnam has experienced rain and thunderstorms in recent days due to a low-pressure trough. Rainfall from 7 PM on 9/7 to 7 AM today ranged from 80-120 mm, with some areas receiving higher amounts, such as Sa Pa (Lao Cai) with 196 mm, Yen Lac (Cao Bang) with 179 mm, Thuong Giap (Tuyen Quang) with 178 mm, and Dong Cuu (Phu Tho) with 172 mm.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting stated that the low-pressure trough will continue to cause showers and thunderstorms in northern Vietnam today, with rainfall gradually decreasing tomorrow. From 15/7, a low-pressure area to the west will bring widespread hot weather to the north.

Accuweather forecasts temperatures in Hanoi between 26-34°C early next week, increasing to 28-37°C by mid-week. High-altitude areas like Sa Pa (Lao Cai) are expected to see temperatures between 19-27°C by mid-week.

In central Vietnam, rain is expected in Thanh Hoa and Ha Tinh tonight, diminishing quickly afterward. From 15/7, the western mountainous regions of Quang Tri and Da Nang will experience hot weather with temperatures reaching 35°C and above due to the influence of the western low-pressure area.

Within a day, with the added effect of the foehn wind, the Thanh Hoa - Hue region and the south-central coast (Da Nang - the former Ninh Thuan) will experience widespread hot weather with temperatures reaching 35-38°C, and exceeding 38°C in some areas. This heatwave is expected to last through the week.

The Central Highlands (the former Tay Nguyen provinces) and southern Vietnam will continue to be affected by moderate to strong southwesterly winds, bringing regular afternoon and evening thunderstorms next week. Temperatures in the Central Highlands are forecast to peak between 28-31°C, and between 32-34°C in southern Vietnam.
