Northern Vietnam's heatwave breaks

Due to the influence of a low-pressure trough, northern Vietnam will experience thunderstorms today and for the next two days, primarily in the midlands and mountainous regions, ending the heatwave.

Northern Vietnam has sweltered under a heatwave for the past four days, with humidity around 60-65% and temperatures exceeding 35°C for 11-16 hours daily. According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Hanoi's highest temperature yesterday was over 38°C in Lang and Son Tay, while stations in Hoai Duc, Ha Dong, and Ba Vi recorded nearly 38°C. Son Dong (Bac Giang) experienced the highest temperature in northern Vietnam, exceeding 39°C.

Yesterday afternoon, a low-pressure trough moving across northern Vietnam triggered widespread showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall from 7 PM yesterday to 8 AM today reached 125 mm in Chieng Cong (Son La), 100 mm in Ngoc Long (Tuyen Quang), 128 mm in Pu Sam Cap (Lai Chau), and 155 mm in Huoi Leng 1 (Dien Bien).

The meteorological agency forecasts continued showers and thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow across northern Vietnam due to the low-pressure trough, concentrating in the mountainous and midland areas. Thanks to the rain, temperatures over the next two days will drop below the heatwave threshold (under 35°C).

Accuweather forecasts Hanoi's temperature tomorrow between 26-32°C, rising again to 28-36°C by the weekend. High-altitude areas above 1,500 m like Sa Pa (Lao Cai) will range from 20-26°C.

From 2/8 to 4/8, the low-pressure trough will weaken, causing the rain to cease and the heatwave to return to northern Vietnam.

The central region, located south of the low-pressure trough crossing northern Vietnam, combined with the foehn wind effect, will experience widespread hot weather from now until the end of the week. Temperatures in the Thanh Hoa - Hue area and the south-central coast will reach 35-37°C, with some areas exceeding 38°C.

The Central Highlands (Tay Nguyen) and southern Vietnam will continue to experience afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms due to the moderate southwest monsoon. Daily high temperatures in the Central Highlands will be 29-31°C, and in southern Vietnam, 32-34°C.
