Nguyen Hai Anh, Vice President and Secretary General of the Vietnam Red Cross, stated that Cuba is experiencing a severe crisis. The economy has declined sharply following the Covid-19 pandemic, while earthquakes and floods from 2024 to the present have continued to devastate infrastructure, further complicating people's lives.
Damage to many power plants and depleted energy supplies have forced rolling blackouts in many areas, directly impacting hospitals, schools, and daily life. The healthcare system lacks essential medicines and supplies; many patients must receive treatment under limited conditions. Food shortages and rising prices have severely affected the elderly, women, and children.
According to Anh, the program is not only humanitarian but also affirms the loyal solidarity between the two nations, with the message: "Vietnam never forgets Cuba; Vietnam is always with Cuba, just as Cuba is always with Vietnam".
The Vietnam Red Cross has worked with the Cuban Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the Latin America Regional Office to develop a plan for receiving, distributing, and publicly reporting aid, ensuring it reaches the intended recipients.
Vietnam is currently Cuba's second-largest trading partner and largest investor from the Asia-Pacific region. Bilateral trade reached 261.7 million USD in 2021, 181.8 million USD in 2022, and 57.33 million USD in 2023.
