Prime minister allocates 250 billion VND for flood relief in three provinces

On 2/8, the prime minister decided to provide 250 billion VND in emergency aid to Son La, Dien Bien, and Nghe An provinces to address the aftermath of severe flooding.

Dien Bien and Nghe An provinces will each receive 100 billion VND, while Son La will receive 50 billion VND. This funding, drawn from the central government's 2025 budget reserves, will help the three provinces begin recovery efforts and stabilize the lives of affected residents.

The prime minister instructed the provinces to manage and utilize the funds according to regulations, ensuring transparency and accountability to prevent any misappropriation.

Recent heavy rainfall has caused flash floods, landslides, and widespread inundation, leading to significant loss of life and property in the three provinces. Son La experienced five periods of heavy rainfall, three of which had severe consequences. Five houses were swept away, numerous roads were damaged or submerged, and several suspension bridges were destroyed. 14 villages were isolated. Son La province declared a state of emergency to respond to the heavy rain, flash floods, landslides, and land subsidence in 14 key communes.

As of the morning of 2/8, flash floods and heavy rain influenced by a low-pressure trough caused 10 deaths and 7 injuries in Dien Bien. The estimated property damage is 300 billion VND, with over 310 houses collapsed, swept away, or damaged, requiring immediate evacuation. Many national highways, inter-commune roads, and village roads were affected by landslides. Irrigation works, schools, and office buildings were damaged or flooded. The power grid in Tia Dinh, Xa Dung, Na Son, and Muong Luan communes was disrupted, and telecommunications were interrupted.

According to a report from Nghe An province, the remnants of Typhoon Wipha, the third typhoon of the year, caused 4 deaths and 4 injuries. Nearly 7,500 houses were completely destroyed, buried, swept away, or damaged. Forty schools and thousands of hectares of crops and production forests were devastated. Roads, schools, health stations, and government offices suffered severe damage. The initial estimated total damage is 3,540 billion VND.
