Quang Ninh and Hai Phong one year after Typhoon Yagi

Devastated by Typhoon Yagi, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh have swiftly rebuilt infrastructure, restored production, and stabilized residents' lives.

Bai Chay Bridge, a landmark of Quang Ninh province, stands tall on 7/9/2025, one year after Typhoon Yagi, a category 12-13 storm, made landfall, bringing heavy rain across northern Vietnam.

The typhoon caused significant damage, estimated at 24 trillion VND, resulting in 29 deaths and 1,609 injuries. Thousands of aquaculture cages were sunk or damaged.

The Quang Ninh Museum welcomed visitors on 7/9. A year ago, Yagi damaged 1,100 m2 of reinforced glass, 714 m2 of plaster walls and ceilings, five sets of hydraulic glass doors, 344 m of railings, 1,000 m2 of heat-resistant roofing, and numerous other items.

This popular attraction was closed for three weeks for repairs. During the recent National Day holiday, the museum welcomed over 14,600 visitors.

The Quang Ninh Exhibition and Convention Center (also known as the "Dolphin Palace") located on Tran Quoc Nghien Street has been renovated. The nearly 21,000 m2 facility, with a total investment of 1,150 billion VND, sits adjacent to Ha Long Bay.

When Yagi hit, the Dolphin Palace's roof was blown off, exposing thick yellow foam insulation and the aluminum frame. Windows shattered and metal roofing peeled away.

Vegetation on the hills of old Ha Long City has recovered.

Typhoon Yagi caused the collapse of approximately 117,000 ha of forest, over 30% of Quang Ninh's forested area, with nearly 50% being planted forests. The forestry sector suffered losses exceeding 6,500 billion VND. The fallen trees created 6 tons of flammable material, leading to dozens of fires.

The Sunworld food street in central Bai Chay, devastated by Typhoon Yagi, has been beautifully restored and is now attracting tourists.

The vegetation in Ha Long Bay has revived, returning to its vibrant green state before the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi.

Cai Rong Port, in the former Van Don district, served as a shelter for fishing boats and aquaculture rafts on Ha Long Bay.

During Typhoon Yagi, fishing boats and aquaculture vessels were tossed about by waves, sustaining damage. Van Don's total seafood output ready for harvest suffered losses of approximately 25,638 tons of oysters, 636 tons of fish, and 5,840 tons of other seafood. In addition, 2,000 ha of oysters and 3,500 newly stocked fish cages were damaged, resulting in total losses exceeding 2,200 billion VND.

Immediately following the typhoon, authorities and residents actively worked to overcome the aftermath and restore production.

When Typhoon Yagi struck, around 80 power poles collapsed along Highway 18 in Cam Pha, paralyzing traffic and causing localized power outages for several days.

Tuan Chau International Marina had 23 tourist boats sunk by Yagi (Quang Ninh had a total of 269 vessels damaged, including 27 tourist boats). Ten days after the storm, the marina was bustling with approximately 30,000 visitors, nearly 90% of whom were from overseas.

Quang Ninh's tourism sector quickly recovered. In 2024, the province welcomed 19 million visitors, including over 3.5 million international tourists. During the recent National Day holiday, the province welcomed 339,000 visitors, including 65,000 international tourists.

Factories in the Do Son Industrial Zone, Hai Phong City, have fully recovered from roof damage sustained during Typhoon Yagi.

The typhoon swept through Hai Phong with winds reaching level 12, causing two deaths and 65 injuries. 102,870 houses and 94 defense structures were damaged, and over 82,000 trees were uprooted. The total damage was nearly 11 trillion VND, equivalent to 10% of the city's total budget revenue in 2023.

Cat Ba Town, a tourism hub in Hai Phong City, was one of the areas most affected by Yagi, but it has now recovered.

According to the former Cat Hai District People's Committee, Yagi damaged 4,700 houses and businesses on the island, causing nearly 700 billion VND in damage, over 100 times the district's total budget revenue for the first six months of the year.

Trees on Ly Tu Trong Street, Hong Bang ward, are growing back after the storm. According to the Hai Phong City People's Committee, Yagi caused the collapse of 82,000 trees, including over 22,000 within the inner city.

After the storm, in addition to cleanup efforts, Hai Phong City replanted large fallen trees, and many old trees received nutrients to accelerate their recovery. As a result, 80% of the trees affected by the typhoon have been saved.
