Release of over 60 kg sea turtle back to nature

An over 60 kg green sea turtle, caught in a fisherman's bottom net in Ca Mau, was rescued by border guards and forest rangers and released back into the sea.

On the afternoon of 20/4, the Tam Giang Tay Border Post (Ca Mau Border Guard), in coordination with the Ngoc Hien Forest Protection Department and fishermen from Tan An commune, successfully released a green sea turtle into its natural habitat.

The rescue followed a discovery around 11 PM on 19/4 by Nguyen Van Nghia, a resident of Bao Vi hamlet, Tan An commune. While checking his nets, Mr. Nghia found the large turtle entangled. He brought the animal ashore for temporary care and promptly reported the incident to the border guard force.

According to the Tam Giang Tay Border Post, hawksbill and green sea turtles are rare species globally and are listed in the Vietnam and world Red Books, requiring strict protection. These turtles seasonally come ashore to sandy beaches to lay eggs. The ongoing efforts to rescue and release caught turtles back into nature are vital for conserving sea turtle populations and maintaining ecosystem balance.

Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Minh Nhong, Head of the Tam Giang Tay Border Post, urged fishermen to report any discovery of rare marine animals caught in their nets to the authorities for proper handling. He emphasized that these animals should not be kept or illegally consumed.

This recent release follows a similar event two days prior, when Truong Vu Bao, from the same locality, also discovered a hawksbill sea turtle and a green sea turtle caught in his nets while fishing at sea. After ensuring their safety on shore, he contacted authorities for their subsequent release.
