10-lane Tay Thang Long road in disarray, land handover delayed

Many households in Dong Ngac Ward have not handed over land, leaving the Tay Thang Long road project unfinished, with many sections in disarray and deteriorating, affecting progress and traffic.

The 10-lane road connecting West Lake to western Hanoi is a vital transport artery, facilitating connectivity and expanding development space for the capital's western area.

The Tay Thang Long road project spans about 33 km, divided into five sections. Currently, the section from Vo Chi Cong to Pham Van Dong and the section from Van Tien Dung to Tay Tuu - Thuong Cat have been completed and operational since 2019.

Section two, from Pham Van Dong to Van Tien Dung, is about 3,2 km long. It was expected to be completed in 2021 but remains stalled due to land clearance issues in Dong Ngac Ward. Many residential houses in this area have passed the 31/3/2026 deadline for handover.

This section of the project has a total investment of approximately 2.344 billion VND, with land clearance costs accounting for 1.673 billion VND. The total area to be acquired is about 19,2 hectares, including 15,93 hectares of agricultural land and 3,27 hectares of residential land.

At the beginning of the route, at the intersection with Pham Van Dong road, some residential houses are being demolished to clear the land.

According to the Dong Ngac Ward People's Committee, progress is hindered because some households disagree with the compensation rates. They also have concerns regarding land use origin and measured area.

Since mid-3/2026, the ward announced a draft regulation for drawing lots for resettlement locations for eligible households. The draft prioritizes location selection for those who comply well and hand over land early.

Within the project area, Do Hong Nhung, a businesswoman on Co Nhue road, expressed concerns about the compensation amount. She hopes to be allocated resettlement land due to her large family. According to her, her current house is located on a main road, which is convenient for business. Relocation would impact her livelihood, and the cost of renting a new business location is high.

Drawn by her grandchild through alley 162 Co Nhue, cluttered with demolished houses, Nguyen Thi Mai, 78, stated that after handing over her house, she is living with seven people in cramped conditions, disrupting her daily life. Mai hopes for early resettlement to stabilize her life.

About 500 m away, the section from the Nhue River to the Dong Ngac Ward People's Committee office has been paved for many years but is not yet in use because the route is incomplete. The road surface is peeling and damaged, with many sections littered with sand and gravel, posing safety risks.

The section from the Nhue river to Van Tien Dung road has only completed a rough one-way paving with five lanes out of a total of 10 lanes. Residents traveling here frequently endure dusty conditions.

The Nhue River overpass, the only bridge on the route, remains unfinished. The construction site is deserted, with building materials scattered about.

Section four of the Tay Thang Long axis, approximately 4,9 km long, from Tay Tuu to Ring Road 4, is beginning construction. In the area in front of the O Dien Commune Police headquarters, the cleared land is gradually becoming visible after being leveled.

The final section, about 20 km long, from Ring Road 4 through O Dien Commune to Son Tay Ward, has begun construction.

The Tay Thang Long axis, 33 km long with 10 lanes, is a radial route along the East-West axis. It connects central Hanoi with Son Tay urban area and the Tay Ho, Bac Tu Liem, Dan Phuong, and Phuc Tho areas. When completed, the road will ease pressure on existing routes and promote socio-economic development in the capital's western region.
