Three cars in chain collision, Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh expressway jammed for 4 km

A chain collision on Long Thanh bridge caused a traffic jam stretching approximately 4 km on the expressway from Dong Nai to Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of 6/9.

Around 3:30 PM, a 7-seater car traveling on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway rear-ended the vehicle in front while descending Long Thanh bridge. Another car following closely behind then crashed into them, resulting in a chain collision.

The vehicles blocked one lane, disrupting traffic across the bridge. This incident occurred on a sunday afternoon, a peak time when vehicles from provinces like Dong Nai and Ba Ria - Vung Tau were traveling towards Ho Chi Minh City. This resulted in a traffic jam stretching approximately 4 km, from Long Thanh bridge to the Long Phuoc toll booth.

Quang Trung, a cargo truck driver on the expressway, stated that Long Thanh bridge has only two lanes. The three damaged cars blocked one lane, forcing vehicles to proceed slowly through the area.

"Just past the Long Phuoc toll booth, cars were packed tightly in all lanes, inching forward", Trung said.

Around 4:30 PM, authorities towed the three damaged cars to the Long Phuoc toll booth for processing, clearing the scene. Traffic police simultaneously diverted vehicles from the National Highway 51 intersection to National Highway 1 to ease congestion towards Ho Chi Minh City.

The Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, spanning 55 km through Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai, currently features four lanes. This route experiences heavy traffic and often becomes congested on weekends, holidays, and Tet. The section within Ho Chi Minh City is slated for expansion from four to eight lanes.
