On 6/4, the Quang Tri Sub-Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health announced it had collaborated with Nam Dong Ha ward to cull 100 pigs. These pigs were infected with african swine fever and lacked quarantine documents.
Two days prior, in the afternoon, authorities at the Nam Dong Ha weighing station inspected a truck driven by Vu Van Bien, residing in Bac Dong Hung commune, Hung Yen province. The truck was carrying 100 commercial pigs, each weighing approximately 70 kg. The driver could not produce a quarantine certificate for the animals.
Livestock Production and Animal Health Station No. 7 took samples from the pigs for testing. Test results confirmed that all the pigs were infected with african swine fever, leading to their immediate culling.

Driver Bien stated he was hired to transport the pigs from Hung Yen to the South. He claimed no knowledge of their origin or any related documents. According to their agreement, the driver would receive payment after delivering the goods to a predetermined location. However, after the pigs were identified as infected, Bien could not contact the owner of the consignment. Authorities are currently verifying the origin of the pigs.
African swine fever is a dangerous infectious disease in pigs caused by a virus. It can occur year-round with a mortality rate of nearly 100%. The virus has high resistance, can survive for a long time in the environment and in pork, and spreads through direct or indirect contact.
