The An Giang Department of Construction revealed this information at a press briefing on 8/7.
The 110 kV Ha Tien - Phu Quoc submarine cable, which supplied about 70% of the island's electricity, was damaged in late 11/2025. The incident, caused by piling work for a coastal road, affected approximately 30,000 households and numerous tourism establishments. Following the incident, the power sector restored temporary supply by erecting offshore poles and connecting overhead lines to the existing submarine cable system.

According to the Department of Construction, the Southern Power Corporation proposed two solutions. The first option involves constructing approximately 460 meters of new 110 kV overhead sea-crossing power lines, installing two offshore poles, and modifying an existing pole for connection. This solution is estimated to cost over 15 billion VND and could be completed by 10/2026, requiring a maximum two-day power outage for construction.
This option offers quick progress, utilizes domestic materials, and simplifies management, maintenance, and troubleshooting. However, constructing an overhead line would alter the original design of the submarine cable project, potentially impacting the coastal landscape and urban planning. It also necessitates additional procedures related to maritime affairs, national defense, and security.

The second option involves replacing the damaged approximately 100-meter section of the submarine cable and installing two specialized underwater splice boxes, with an estimated total cost exceeding 34 billion VND.
While this solution preserves the original design, it depends on importing equipment from abroad, meaning completion would not be until 4/2027 at the earliest. It would also require a 20-25 day power outage for installation. Furthermore, introducing additional underwater splice points necessitates further assessment of technical reliability and long-term operational risks, particularly since the existing cable has been in service for many years.
The An Giang Provincial People's Committee is currently conducting a comprehensive evaluation of both options and has sought the Ministry of Industry and Trade's opinion on the technical solutions proposed by the power sector.

Currently, Phu Quoc receives electricity from two primary sources: the 220 kV Kien Binh - Phu Quoc overhead line and the 110 kV Ha Tien - Phu Quoc submarine cable. The submarine cable specifically supplies the majority of the island's electricity, particularly to the central and northern regions.
To meet electricity demand and prepare for APEC 2027, the Southern Power Corporation is investing in a 220 kV Phu Quoc substation and a 40 km 110 kV Phu Quoc - Bac Phu Quoc transmission line to enhance transmission capacity for the island's northern area.
