Vietnam Railways receives new generation locomotive batch

New D19E locomotives run at a maximum of 120 km/h, improved to pull trains more safely and stably, reduce incidents, and meet passenger and cargo transportation needs.

On the morning of 29/8, at Yen Vien station, the Vietnam National Railway Corporation (VNR) received the first batch of new D19E locomotives, part of its locomotive investment project extending until 2030.

These locomotives utilize a CAT3512B diesel engine, AC-DC electric transmission, and six traction motors. Each vehicle weighs 81 tons, with an axle load of 13,5 tons.

The new generation D19E builds upon a locomotive series that has operated in Vietnam for many years, but incorporates over 40 improvements. These changes focus on enhancing control capabilities, safety, durability, and working conditions for the drivers.

Notably, a G300 computer system replaces older technology, enabling real-time equipment status monitoring, anomaly alerts, data logging, and fault diagnosis support. This allows technical staff to detect and address malfunctions earlier, minimizing disruptions to journeys.

The driver's cab is reinforced to enhance collision resistance. The control panel, windshield, seats, and observation equipment have also been redesigned, facilitating convenient operation for drivers, especially during adverse weather conditions.

Operating components have been improved for greater durability and reduced maintenance requirements. The air compressor operates more stably, reducing vibration and noise; the drive unit minimizes friction, leakage, and wear. The bogie frame uses high-strength steel, and the piping system has been switched to stainless steel to resist corrosion.

These improvements are primarily within the locomotive itself and do not directly alter passenger car amenities. However, the enhanced operational stability, early fault detection, and increased safety will help limit journey interruptions and boost the reliability of passenger trains.

The new locomotive batch will gradually supplement and replace older vehicles that have been in service for many years, are nearing the end of their lifespan, or have limited capacity. VNR anticipates that this initiative will improve train hauling capacity on the North-South route, domestic lines, and international intermodal services, while also allowing the corporation to progressively master the technology for maintaining and repairing modern locomotives.
