A series of cultural and sports exchange activities, held by Vietnam's Engineering Unit 4 and Chinese units at the UNISFA Mission in Abyei, concluded with a vibrant cultural night on the evening of 18/8. These events, running from 4/8 to 18/8, aimed to foster understanding and camaraderie among peacekeepers and the local community.
The highlight of the series was the cultural, artistic, and culinary exchange night, which drew approximately 700 attendees. The program featured the military force commander and acting head of the UNISFA Mission, leaders from various agencies and units within the mission, local students, and residents.
On stage, Vietnamese and Chinese peacekeepers presented art, martial arts, and cultural programs unique to each country. Among the most captivating performances was the Vietnamese bamboo dance, which actively involved local students and peacekeepers from various nations. Abyei children practiced and performed alongside international soldiers, creating a warm and engaging atmosphere. Nyibol Deng, an elementary school student in Abyei, described the experience as "extremely excited and happy".
Beyond the stage, Engineering Unit 4 showcased traditional costumes, books about President Ho Chi Minh, General Vo Nguyen Giap, and images of Vietnam. Chinese units displayed artifacts and publications introducing their traditional culture. Vietnamese pho, banh mi, and coffee were also presented alongside traditional Chinese dishes, all prepared by soldiers from both sides. This space provided an opportunity for mission members, local residents, and students to converse, enjoy food, and learn more about the cultures of the two nations.

Lieutenant Colonel Trinh Van Cuong, Commander of Vietnam's Engineering Unit 4, stated that these exchange activities aim to enhance understanding among Vietnamese and Chinese peacekeepers, other mission components, and the local community. Professional Lieutenant Duong Hong Nhung found sharing a stage with Chinese colleagues and Abyei students to be a special experience, noting that initial nervousness due to language differences quickly faded with the performance atmosphere and the audience's enthusiastic response.
The cultural events were complemented by sports activities, including friendly matches of table tennis, badminton, tug-of-war, and Chinese chess. Despite the harsh weather conditions in Abyei, Vietnamese and Chinese peacekeepers competed, cheered, and interacted after their mission duties.
Abyei is a disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan. Vietnam began deploying engineering forces to the UNISFA Mission in 5/2022. To date, over 1,100 Vietnamese personnel have participated in peacekeeping operations in missions in Central Africa, South Sudan, Abyei, and at the United Nations headquarters.
