Starting her career as a high school teacher, she transitioned to a specialist role at the An Giang Provincial Party Committee Office. She then held various local positions, including vice chairwoman and chairwoman of the Provincial Women's Union; deputy head of the Provincial Party Committee's Mass Mobilization Department; and secretary of the Tan Chau Town Party Committee. In early 2013, she became vice chairwoman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee, and two years later, she assumed the position of secretary of the An Giang Provincial Party Committee.
After many years of local service, in 4/2021, Vo Thi Anh Xuan was elected Vice President by the National Assembly, a role she has held ever since. She twice served as acting president, in early 2023 and early 2024.
At the 14th Party Congress in 1/2026, Vo Thi Anh Xuan was re-elected to the Central Committee and appointed to the Secretariat.
The Constitution stipulates that the vice president is elected by the National Assembly from among its delegates. The vice president assists the president in performing duties and may be authorized by the president to carry out certain tasks.
If the president is unable to work for an extended period, the vice president assumes the role of acting president. Should the presidency become vacant, the vice president serves as acting president until the National Assembly elects a new president.
