Mr. Nguyen Huy Tien appointed prosecutor general of Supreme People's Procuracy

Mr. Nguyen Huy Tien, 58, was elected by the National Assembly to serve as prosecutor general of the Supreme People's Procuracy for the 2026-2031 term, with 474 out of 474 deputies present approving the decision on the afternoon of 7/4.

Mr. Nguyen Huy Tien holds a Doctor of Law degree. He is a member of the 14th Party Central Committee and a deputy of the 16th National Assembly.

In the early years of his career, he worked in the judicial sector in Quang Ninh and Thai Binh provinces. Later, he joined the Institute for Exercising the Right to Prosecute and Supervising Appellate Trials in Hanoi, under the Supreme People's Procuracy, where he successively held positions as deputy director and director.

Subsequently, he held various positions, including director of the Quang Binh Provincial People's Procuracy, director of the High-Level People's Procuracy in Hanoi, and director of Department 5 (Department for Exercising the Right to Prosecute and Supervising Investigations of Corruption and Position-Related Cases) at the Supreme People's Procuracy.

In 9/2018, he was appointed deputy prosecutor general of the Supreme People's Procuracy. He was then elected prosecutor general by the National Assembly in 8/2024, a position he has held until now.

Currently, the Supreme People's Procuracy has 6 deputy prosecutor generals: Mr. Ho Duc Anh, Mr. Nguyen Duy Giang, Mr. Nguyen Quang Dung, Mr. Ta Quang Khai, Mr. Tran Hai Quan, and Mr. Nguyen Duc Thai.

The People's Procuracy is the agency responsible for exercising the right to prosecute and supervising judicial activities. Its duties include protecting the Constitution and laws, human rights, citizens' rights, and the interests of the State, organizations, and individuals, thereby ensuring that laws are strictly and uniformly observed.

According to regulations, the prosecutor general of the Supreme People's Procuracy is elected, relieved of duty, or dismissed by the National Assembly, upon the proposal of the President. Their term of office aligns with that of the National Assembly. When the National Assembly's term ends, the prosecutor general continues in their role until the new National Assembly elects a replacement. Deputy prosecutor generals of the Supreme People's Procuracy are appointed, relieved of duty, or removed by the President, based on the prosecutor general's recommendation.
