The conversation took place just before the US's opening match in Group D at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. This marks the first time in 32 years the US is co-hosting the World Cup, and the national team enters the tournament with its strongest squad in years. This strength was demonstrated by their 4-1 victory over Paraguay on 12/6, the first time the US has scored four goals in a World Cup match.

During the call, facilitated by Andrew Giuliani, Executive Director of the White House World Cup Task Force, Trump offered direct encouragement to the coaching staff and players. He praised coach Pochettino before sharing his prediction. "I just want to say you are a great coach, a great man," Trump told Pochettino. "I know how good the players are. I think you have a great chance to go all the way."
While enjoying high expectations from fans, the US team also faces significant pressure to perform. In World Cup history, the US has only reached the semi-finals 'mot' time (in 1930) and the quarter-finals 'mot' time (in 2002). In their last 'ba' appearances, the team was eliminated in the round of 16.
Coach Pochettino responded to the encouragement by pledging maximum effort. "Thank you, Mr. President, for your support. We will do everything to make you and all the people proud," the Argentine coach stated.
The US national team receives a call from President Donald Trump before their opening match.
The US enters the tournament with a squad featuring players from top European leagues and MLS. In attack, Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun, and Malik Tillman are expected to make a difference. The midfield boasts Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams, while Sergino Dest and Antonee Robinson cover the flanks. However, a potential weakness remains in defensive depth, which could impact the team in knockout matches.
President Trump was not present at SoFi Stadium for the opening match, but he is expected to follow the team in subsequent games and may attend the final. He previously attended the FIFA Club World Cup final.

Trump's interest in the 2026 World Cup extends beyond sports. He has collaborated closely with FIFA President Gianni Infantino during the tournament's preparations and previously received the FIFA Peace Prize ahead of the event. This decision drew controversy, with some European football officials questioning FIFA's neutrality.
Additionally, this year's tournament has encountered several off-field issues. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) issued a travel advisory, warning international fans about the risk of denied entry and human rights concerns. A referee and a player were previously denied entry due to similar issues.
Following their opening match, the US will face Australia and Turkey in the group stage. However, with their dominant 4-1 victory on opening day, Pochettino's squad has effectively secured a spot in the round of 16.
