In World Cup history, the US has only reached the semi-finals 'mot' time (in 1930) and the quarter-finals 'mot' time (in 2002). Trump's interest in the 2026 World Cup extends beyond sports. He has collaborated closely with FIFA President Gianni Infantino during the tournament's preparations and previously received the FIFA Peace Prize ahead of the event. This decision drew controversy, with some European football officials questioning FIFA's neutrality.

Additionally, this year's tournament has encountered several off-field issues. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) issued a travel advisory, warning international fans about the risk of denied entry and human rights concerns. A referee and a player were previously denied entry due to similar issues.

Following their opening match, the US will face Australia and Turkey in the group stage. However, with their dominant 4-1 victory on opening day, Pochettino's squad has effectively secured a spot in the round of 16.
