US defender sets perfect passing record at World Cup

Chris Richards completed all 83 passes in the US's 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening match of Group D at World Cup 2026, establishing an unprecedented milestone in the tournament's history.

In the 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their World Cup 2026 opener on 12/6, Richards delivered a near-perfect performance despite not being fully recovered from injury. "I feel good. If there's a time to sacrifice, it's now", he said before the match. Nevertheless, the American defender set a milestone never seen since Opta began collecting World Cup data in 1966. In his World Cup debut, he completed all 83 passes, achieving a 100% accuracy rate – an unprecedented achievement in a World Cup match.

"Chris is a warrior", teammate Tim Ream commented. "Nothing could stop him from playing in this match. He might be sore all over tomorrow, but that's the type of player every team wants. Overcoming injury and playing a key role in the win is a huge boost for the entire squad."

The US national team reached the round of 16 at the 1994 World Cup before losing 0-1 to Brazil. That generation featured charismatic players such as Tony Meola, John Harkes, Eric Wynalda, Cobi Jones, Claudio Reyna, Marcelo Balboa, and Tab Ramos. However, the most iconic figure was Alexi Lalas, with his distinctive long hair and leadership presence in defense. Three decades later, Chris Richards, the defender born in 2000 who currently plays for Crystal Palace, appears to be continuing that role.

The journey from Alabama to the Premier League

Richards stated his love for football truly formed after a trip to Argentina. Before turning 16, he pursued football, basketball, and triathlon simultaneously. After being released by the Dallas academy, Richards' career unexpectedly accelerated. At 19, he signed his first professional contract with Bayern, then went on loan to Hoffenheim before moving to Crystal Palace in 2022 for approximately 13 million USD. He is now a key player for one of the most successful generations in Crystal Palace history, having won the FA Cup, English Super Cup, and UEFA Conference League in the past two years.

Richards' tattoos reflect his journey

Beyond his on-field success, Richards is also a strong voice against racism. "Because of what I do, I was considered too dark for white people, but too white in the eyes of people of color", the player born in 2000 recounted. "I had a lot of trouble finding my own identity when I was young. Every time we went to tournaments, sometimes we had to hear things that 12, 13, or 14-year-olds shouldn't hear."

Growing up in Alabama – the birthplace of the American civil rights movement – he chose Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. as the first figure to be tattooed on his arm. Later, his tattoo collection expanded to include influential figures such as former US President Barack Obama and boxing legend Muhammad Ali. "Ali is the greatest fighter of all time. Not only for what he did in the ring but also for the values he created outside of sports. He was a powerful person", Richards said.

Another figure who strongly inspired Richards is the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant. "My Instagram account is East Mamba. I think everyone knows Kobe for his never-give-up spirit. He tore his Achilles tendon but still stood up to make those final free throws", the US defender shared.

For Richards, the figures on his body are not just idols but also daily sources of motivation. The US defender hopes to continue the legacy of the idols he admires. "The people I have tattooed on me inspire me greatly", he expressed. "If one day I can inspire someone to play football, basketball, or pursue a political path, that would be the greatest achievement of my life. I hope to tell my children about these tattoos later and that they too find motivation as I once did."
