Inside a billionaire's old private jet hotel

This nearly 60-year-old private jet, once owned by a billionaire, has been converted into a hotel with room rates reaching 1,200 USD per night.

This Boeing 727 first flew in 1967, was converted into a luxury private jet around 1980 for a billionaire, and stopped flying in 2012. When Palmer bought it as a play area for his children, the plane no longer had wings. After a few years, he decided to list the aircraft on short-term rental platforms.

On the outskirts of Bristol, England, local businessman Johnny Palmer has transformed a Boeing 727, originally from the 1960s, into a unique 95 square meter accommodation. This aircraft, which first flew in 1967, was converted into a luxury private jet for a billionaire around 1980 before ceasing operations in 2012. Palmer initially acquired the wingless aircraft as a playground for his children. After several years, he decided to repurpose it into a short-term rental property, listing it on various accommodation platforms.

The 95 square meter hotel includes two living rooms, one master bedroom, a private bathroom with a shower, a sofa, a kitchen, and the original cockpit.

"Although we regularly maintain and repair everything, this aircraft is quite old. Guests like it solely for its original 1981 interior," Palmer stated.

Guests are free to explore the cockpit, pressing buttons and flipping switches. A recent guest, a pilot, booked the hotel for his son to experience the sensation of flying.

Located in a secluded industrial area, the jet's exterior is deliberately featured in less-than-flattering promotional images, a strategy designed by Palmer to spark guest curiosity. Inside, the hotel offers a step back in time, with its interior meticulously preserved in its original 1980s style, giving guests the feeling of traveling through time.

Room rates are approximately 300 USD per night on weekdays and 600 USD for weekends. During holidays, the price can reach up to 1,200 USD per night.

The master bedroom retains the plane's original premium mattress. "It's so soft I had to keep it," Palmer said, adding that all linens are new. Additional amenities include a private bathroom, a hot tub, and a sauna.

The jet's luxurious past has even fueled rumors of ownership by Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. However, Palmer assures guests that the property is secure and strictly protected. This accommodation is also environmentally friendly, equipped with solar panels and wind turbines that generate more energy than required for its operations.
