The incident occurred around 3 AM on 19/9 at a resort on Jalan Kamiri, Semporna, Sabah, eastern Malaysia. The victim is a 25-year-old Chinese tourist.
According to initial investigations, the female tourist was sleeping alone when she discovered an unknown man in her room. The man then attacked and sexually assaulted her.

The victim managed to escape the man, running into bushes near the accommodation to hide. In the morning, a resort staff member found her injured.
Semporna police announced on 20/9 that they arrested an 18-year-old suspect. He is currently under investigation for trespassing and using force with the intent to outrage modesty, under Malaysian criminal law.
Following the incident, Jafry Ariffin, Sabah Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, requested officials conduct a comprehensive investigation into the resort. This includes examining its operating license and the safety and security measures in place for guests.
"Tourism businesses, especially accommodation providers, must ensure a safe environment for tourists and rectify security weaknesses," Mr. Jafry said.
Sabah is famous for its marine and island tourist destinations, with Semporna being one of the most popular attractions for international visitors.
