86-page accusation letter against father's affair sparks outrage on Chinese internet

Two daughters of Anhui University's vice president accuse their father of a decade-long affair with a student and academic fraud.

Chinese social media is abuzz with an 86-page accusation document posted on the evening of 3/9 by two biological daughters, aged 20 and 15. The document details allegations of a decade-long illicit relationship and a series of wrongdoings by their father and his mistress.

The father, Pho Loi, 47, is a former professor at Wuhan University and currently serves as the Vice President of Anhui University and a standing committee member of the university's party committee. The alleged mistress, Tang Mong Ky, 35, was previously supervised by Pho for her doctoral thesis and is now a professor at Wuhan University.

The two sisters stated they accidentally discovered their father's secret in 2018 through matching social media avatars. Pho used a Conan character avatar, while Tang used a Haibara Ai avatar from the "Detective Conan" series.

According to the accusation letter, this secret relationship began in 2016 and has continued to the present, despite Tang marrying another colleague in 2023.

Pho consistently responded quickly to Tang's messages, even while on vacation with his wife and children. Tang also sent several provocative messages to Pho's wife. Two years ago, Pho abandoned his family, leaving his wife to shoulder the burden of the house mortgage payments and causing her to lose 15 kilograms.

The daughters' frustration peaked when the eldest daughter directly confronted her father at a university leadership meeting, demanding he sign a commitment to provide 5,000 yuan (approximately 750 USD) per month, despite Pho's annual income reaching one million yuan (150,000 USD).

Beyond family ethics, the two sisters also accused their father and his mistress of embezzlement, misuse of university research funds for personal gain, and academic fraud.

Thanks to Pho's support, Tang experienced rapid promotion: she received her PhD in 2018, became an associate professor in 2020, and was promoted to full professor just one year later.

The document alleges that Pho wrote papers for Tang, allowing her to be credited in prestigious international journals such as Nature Materials and JACS. It also accuses Tang of appropriating the work and first authorship rights of other students in academic papers.

Wuhan University and Anhui University announced on 4/9 that they had received the complaint on 19/8 and would initiate an investigation, with results to be made public. Pho and Tang have not yet commented on the allegations.

Legal experts opined that if the accusations of ethical violations and academic fraud are true, both individuals would likely face dismissal from their positions and the education sector. If the accusations are false, the whistleblowers would be charged with defamation.
