Iran's National Television (IRIB) on 20/3 released a video showing Mojtaba Khamenei lecturing on religious science to students in a hall. This marks the first video of Mojtaba Khamenei published by Iranian state media since he assumed the position of Supreme Leader.
However, IRIB did not disclose the recording's time and location, leading many to believe this was archival footage. Mojtaba Khamenei's appearance in the video without any mention of the current conflict is also considered unusual.
Mojtaba Khamenei took over as Supreme Leader after his father, Ali Khamenei, 86, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the morning of 28/2. Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared publicly since the conflict erupted, fueling speculation about his health.
Iranian media reported he sustained a leg injury in the attack that killed his wife and children. Conversely, US media claimed he was seriously injured and in a coma.
US President Donald Trump also questioned the new Supreme Leader's health. "We don't know if he's alive or dead. No sources have confirmed he is healthy. No one has seen him, it's very unusual", Trump said last week.
Despite his public absence, Khamenei's X social media account frequently posts messages. These messages call for national unity and reiterate that the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping lane, will remain blockaded to pressure Iran's enemies.
He also vowed revenge for National Security Advisor Ali Larijani and Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib, as well as other senior Iranian officials killed by Israel.
The conflict between the US-Israel and Iran is about to enter its fourth week, showing no signs of de-escalation. The conflict has had a profound impact on the region and globally. Attacks and retaliations between the two sides have resulted in over 2,000 deaths, disrupted energy supplies, sharply increased oil prices, and caused volatility in international markets.
