Automaker Tata Motors recently subjected its new a-segment sedan, the Aeris, to a rigorous durability test: a dump truck released 20 tons of gravel and rock directly onto the vehicle. Despite the immense weight, the Aeris's chassis remained largely intact, allowing the car to start and even drive away after being freed from the debris.
The Indian automaker launched the Aeris, which is now the cheapest sedan in its market, with prices starting from 5,29 lakh rupee (approximately 5,500 USD). Though carrying a new name, the Aeris is a comprehensive upgrade of the Tigor line, which debuted in 2017 and saw improvements in 2020 and 2025. It is available with both petrol and compressed natural gas (cng) engine options.
The extreme test was conducted to demonstrate the robustness of the Aeris's chassis and the safety of its cng system. While the roof sustained minor dents and the glass shattered, the passenger compartment remained unharmed. Crucially, all car doors could still open normally, and the vehicle was able to start its engine and move under its own power once the load was removed.
This sub-4 meter vehicle boasts a sharp design and more modern features, while maintaining its cost-optimization advantage. The exterior retains the distinctive notchback silhouette, measuring 3,995 mm in length with a 2,450 mm wheelbase. Its angular front end, similar to the updated Tiago hatchback, features a glossy black grille and modern front bumper air intakes. The Aeris also includes plastic cladding around the wheel arches and offers 14-inch or 15-inch wheel options. The rear is highlighted by slim, connected taillights and a redesigned bumper.
Inside, the top trim offers a 10,25-inch infotainment screen, a digital instrument cluster, dual wireless charging, a 360-degree camera, reverse sensors, an integrated dashcam, ventilated front seats, and rear ac vents. All versions come equipped with 6 airbags, with the highest trim adding blind spot monitoring. The boot capacity is a generous 419 liters.
The Tata Aeris is developed on an upgraded XAlpha chassis platform, offering two 1,2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine options. The pure petrol version delivers 85 hp, while the cng version produces 75 hp. Both engines are paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission and feature front-wheel drive.
Orders for the Tata Aeris are now being accepted in India, with deliveries expected to commence from 11/10. Prices range from 529,000 rupee (5,500 USD) for the Smart manual version to 974,000 rupee (10,200 USD) for the top-tier Accomplished cng automatic version. This competitive pricing positions the Aeris as a more affordable option compared to rivals in its segment, such as the Hyundai Aura, Honda Amaze, and Suzuki Dzire.
