Harley-Davidson owner distraught as pristine motorcycle faces mandatory destruction

A meticulously maintained Harley-Davidson, boasting a gleaming finish and near-new condition, is slated for mandatory destruction under China's vehicle lifespan regulations.

A video titled "Forced to be destroyed," accompanied by a crying emoji, garnered significant attention after being posted on social media on 30/6. The video showcased a Harley-Davidson motorcycle that had only clocked 12,564 km, as indicated by its odometer, and appeared remarkably new, yet it faced mandatory decommissioning.

Commenters beneath the video echoed the poster's regret, noting the motorcycle's pristine appearance, with its gleaming paintwork and metal surfaces nearly flawless. This condition was a testament to its careful maintenance, despite its mileage.

Many questioned the mandatory motorcycle retirement age, arguing that it severely hinders the development of the motorcycle industry. Others agreed, calling the regulation outdated and unsuitable for modern times, given the improved quality of vehicles and the potential for periodic inspections to ensure compliance with new standards.

Some advised the Harley owner to keep the bike at home for display or ride it only near home, warning against taking it to public or crowded places due to the risk of confiscation and fines.

In China, two-wheeled motorcycles are subject to mandatory scrapping after 13 years from the date of registration, or upon reaching 120,000 km, whichever comes first. Conversely, three-wheeled vehicles have corresponding limits of 12 years and 100,000 km. This regulation came into effect on 1/5/2013.

This implies that the Harley-Davidson in the video, despite having only covered just over 12,000 km, has exceeded its 13-year lifespan limit and will be destroyed as per regulations.

For owners violating this regulation, police will confiscate the vehicle and send it directly to a recycling center for mandatory destruction. Owners also face fines ranging from 200 to 2,000 CNY (30-300 USD) and may even have their driving licenses revoked.

Last April, news suggesting the abolition of this regulation drew significant attention in China, according to Sina. However, local vehicle management offices quickly clarified that this information was false, and the regulation remains unchanged and consistent nationwide.
