Police officer disguised as a bush to catch drivers using phones

A New Jersey police officer in camouflage detected 74 drivers using their phones during a 6-hour shift.

Dunellen, New Jersey police implemented a unique strategy to curb distracted driving, deploying an officer disguised as a bush. This unusual tactic, part of a strict campaign launched in late July, resulted in 74 violations being issued in just six hours, targeting drivers using their phones while operating vehicles.

The operation took place along the 100 block of North Washington Avenue, a busy area with significant pedestrian traffic in the city center. The "bush" officer did not work alone, collaborating with plainclothes colleagues wearing "Not a Cop" t-shirts. Their role was to radio ahead to other task force teams positioned further down the road, who would then stop the vehicles and issue citations.

According to a police announcement on Facebook, the 74 citations were issued during a single 6-hour shift. New Jersey enforces stringent regulations against cell phone use while driving, as texting increases the risk of an accident by 23 times. First-time offenders face a minimum fine of USD 200, which rises to at least USD 400 for a second offense. A third violation carries a minimum fine of USD 600, a deduction of three points from the driver's license, and a potential 90-day suspension of driving privileges.

This distinctive sweep also drew attention for an unexpected sighting: a white second-generation Toyota RAV4 EV passing through the control area. While the RAV4 is a common vehicle model, this electric version is quite rare, having been available on the market for only a few years with a limited production run of approximately 2,500 units.
