The accident occurred during a time trial on 19/4 at the Rally Sudamericano Mina Clavero. Drivers Didier Arias and Hector Nunez lost control of their Volkswagen Polo R5 after hitting a curb. The car veered off the road and rolled into the spectator area.
While Arias and Nunez sustained no serious injuries, the consequences for the spectators were tragic, with one fatality and two injured. The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) confirmed the casualties, indefinitely suspended the race, and launched an investigation.
This tragic accident occurred just a day after another fatal incident in Europe, where Finnish driver Juha Miettinen died during qualifying at the Nürburgring circuit in Germany. F1 star Max Verstappen was present at that event.
On social media, Verstappen expressed his shock. "Shocked by what happened today", he wrote. "We love racing, but moments like these remind us how dangerous it is".
Despite existing safety regulations, incidents like these raise new questions about enforcement, crowd control, and risk management on high-speed tracks. This applies to both closed circuits and areas where spectators can stand close to the race path.
